We Funded the Most ESC Teachers Ever!!

Based on total contributions received by our deadline of May 7th, the DMSEF is happy to announce that we will be able to fund 14 full-time equivalent (FTE) ESC teachers for the 2013-14 school year. This is a tremendous accomplishment for all of us and special thanks go out to the two-thirds of DMUSD parents who have contributed to this year’s campaign to make this possible. We’d also like to thank our generous corporate contributors as well in helping us maintain the same level of ESC that we have today.

Our final numbers allow us to fund one additional teacher over last year’s amount (14 vs. 13) which will fill the gap of the one less teacher that the District will be able to fund due to DMUSD budget cuts enacted for next year. Our total ESC staff should be the same 33 FTE’s that we have today, dependent on final enrollment numbers for next year. The 14 represents the highest number of ESC teachers that the DMSEF has ever funded and we have certainly shown through our actions that we are willing to do whatever is necessary to maintain a high level of education for our kids. The words ‘Now, More Than Ever’ have never had more meaning as we all have taken to the challenge of funding the teachers that we know to be so important to our children’s education and success.

While our contribution deadline for the purposes of determining how many teachers we can fund has now come and gone, please do not forget that our fiscal year actually runs through June 30th. Any monies received by June 30th will help position the DMSEF to raise even more money next year and are both highly impactful and appreciated.

Again, thanks to all for contributing to this year’s campaign and allowing us to achieve such a lofty goal.

 We are SO close, but giving has definitely slowed.

With only three days left in the giving campaign, we need everyone to contribute. If you have already given THANK YOU for your support. Please take the next couple of days to talk to your friends and neighbors about the importance of contributing. We need 100% participation!

Thankfully, more than 1,600 families have already contibuted! There are only three days left of our giving campaign and we need to raise nearly $220,000 JUST to retain the program we have today.

Without additional support the principals at each school will need to make tough decisions on what ESC programs to cut. YOU can make a difference. With 100% participation we can reach our goal of a fully funded program at all eight schools, but you must act before April 30^th.

 I don’t agree with how the district is managing their budget.

 The DMSEF is a separate entity from the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD). All contributions given to the DMSEF are restricted monies and can only be used by the DMUSD to fund ESC teacher salaries. Really. There is no chance your contribution will be used by the district for anything other than funding ESC teachers’ salaries and to cover minimal DMSEF operating expenses (only 9.5% in overhead). That means 90.5% of contributions go directly into funding the ESC programs for the DMUSD.

I already pay property taxes that fund the schools. Why should I give more?

Unfortunately funding from the California government alone will not provide enough support for a complete ESC program. For the past 12 years DMUSD parents have stepped up to fund the ESC program and ensure our children receive the best education in the county. Let’s not allow this vital program to disappear.

Parent support (through contributions and volunteering) is critical to both the DMSEF and PTA. Contributions given to the DMSEF are restricted monies and can only be used by the DMUSD to fund ESC teacher salaries. Donations to the PTA support projects, events and expenses specific to each school.

In short, the DMSEF funds ESC “staff” and the PTA funds “stuff” the school needs.
